How the Extension Works

JSON Detection and Formatting

When you visit a webpage that displays JSON data, the Extension detects this content and formats it for better readability. This processing happens entirely within your browser. The JSON content is never sent to any external server.

Manual JSON Input

When you paste JSON into the Extension popup or enter a URL to fetch JSON, this data is processed locally in your browser. If you enter a URL, the Extension fetches the JSON directly from that URL to your browser without routing through any intermediate servers.

Local Storage

The Extension uses Chrome's built-in local storage (chrome.storage.local) for two purposes:

Theme Preference: Your selected color theme is saved locally so the Extension remembers your preference.
Temporary JSON Data: When viewing JSON, the data is temporarily stored in local storage to pass it to the viewer page. This data remains on your device and is not transmitted externally.

You can clear this local data at any time by removing the Extension or clearing your browser's extension data through Chrome settings.

Permissions Explained

The Extension requires certain browser permissions to function. Here is why each permission is needed:

activeTab

Allows the Extension to access the content of the currently active tab when you interact with the Extension. Used to detect and read JSON content displayed in your browser so it can be formatted.

storage

Allows the Extension to save data locally on your device. Used to store your theme preference and temporarily hold JSON data for viewing. All storage is local and never synchronized to external servers.

Host Permissions (All URLs)

Allows the Extension to run on any website. This is necessary because JSON APIs and data can exist on any domain, the Extension needs to automatically detect JSON content regardless of which website you visit, and when you enter a URL in the popup, the Extension needs to fetch JSON from that URL.

This permission does not allow the Extension to collect your browsing history. It only enables JSON detection on pages you visit.

Data Security

Since all data processing occurs locally within your browser:

Your JSON data never leaves your device
There are no servers that could be breached
There is no database storing your information
There is no network transmission of your data to us
